New Work of Historical Fiction

"What a compelling read this is, and so satisfying: a story of a man becoming free,

a spiritual love story with all the tension of a thriller and a plot of mistaken identifies worthy of Shakespeare." - Linda Proud, author of The Botticelli Trilogy

West Chester, PA, January 26, 2012 - Paradise Misplaced: Book One of the Mexican Eden Trilogy (Swedenborg Foundation Press, $15.95, 304 pages, paperback, ISBN-13 978-087785-341-1) is the first book of a genre-spanning trilogy that explores themes of personal transformation.  Shaw's vivid and meticulously researched description of Mexican society in the early twentieth century provides a unique setting for this saga about the loss of Eden.

Captain Benjamín Nyman, son of the wealthiest man in Mexico, has everything a young man could want. But in the days leading up to the Mexican Revolution of 1910, he finds himself questioning his loyalty to the regime. His mother, a staunch supporter of the dictator, is prepared to take drastic measures to keep him from defecting and joining the revolutionaries. Likewise, Benjamín Nyman will do almost anything, even impersonate a priest, in a ruse to expose his brother's fiancée as a calculating fortune hunter - but he too falls in love with her. All this, and a fateful late-night encounter with his father, set the young man on a path that leads to war, poverty, imprisonment, and a mystical friendship with a Tarahumara shaman. Together, he and the shaman plot their escape from the prison - and Benjamín faces a dilemma he never foresaw.

Benjamin's journey of personal transformation will appeal to readers of historical fiction and anyone curious about Mexican history and a Swedenborgian approach to love, life, and spirituality.

Rev. Dr. Ray Silverman Discusses Swedenborg and Timeless Wisdom from Helen Keller's How I Would Help the World on The Lyceum Radio Program with Dr. Michael Jon Kell July 22, 2011, 7-8 am PT on World Talk Radio

West Chester, PA -- Rev. Dr. Ray Silverman, author of the introductory essay to humanitarian Helen Keller's How I Would Help the World (Swedenborg Foundation Press, April 2011, $11.95, 112 pages, paperback, ISBN-13 978-0877853367) will be interviewed by host Michael Jon Kell, MD, PhD on The Lyceum: Critiques of Ancient & Modern Understanding, a new program debuting on World Talk Radio Friday, July 22, 2011 at 7 am PT and 10 am ET.

20th century American heroine Helen Keller, who was blind and deaf, spent a lifetime dedicated to helping the blind and the malnourished around the world.  What Silverman brings forth is a glimpse of her private life and what it was that inspired her to rise above the darkest of times personally and professionally. The secret behind Helen’s invincible optimism was her discovery of wisdom contained in Emanuel Swedenborg’s teachings. She wrote about the importance of love and truth over materialism and selfishness as a way to help heal the world.

Rev. Silverman serves as College Chaplain and Assistant Professor of Religion at Bryn Athyn College, Bryn Athyn, PA. He is the editor/reviser of Helen Keller's Light in My Darkness (Chrysalis Books 1994, 2000), and has co-authored with his wife, Star, Rise Above It: Spiritual Development through the Ten Commandments (Touchstone Seminars, 2000, 2005).

Rev. Silverman has lectured nationally and internationally on theories of Biblical atonement. He has a Ph.D. in English and Education from the University of Michigan, and a Master’s degree from Wesleyan University. He is a member of the Society for Biblical Literature, and the American Academy of Religion.

"The Lyceum refers to the school of inquiry founded by Aristotle. The purpose of the several schools of ancient Athens was to provide a forum where interested persons could present and discuss various ideas about the universe and man's place in it.  We think this was a great idea and see no reason not to continue such inquiries today--but, over the Internet rather than in a public square. Tune in, listen to our remarkable guests and then head to the library!" comments Kell. The interview will be live and posted for replay 24/7 within 24 business hours on Dr. Kell's host page on World Talk Radio. On July 29, 2011, Kell’s guest is Stephen Larsen, PhD, who will expand the discussion about the life and teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg.

Radio host Dr. Michael Jon Kell is a medical scientist, psychiatrist, inventor, engineer, narrative poet and "free-thinker".  He has conducted scientific research on a diverse number of subjects - quantum physics, polymer chemistry, artificial kidneys, drug addiction, pain management, longevity medicine, and herbal medicine, to name a few.  He holds 11 U.S. patents for his discoveries, and is the author of ten books and over 50 scientific publications. Dr. Kell's web site is mindbrainbody.com.

The Swedenborg Foundation, housed in a historic building in West Chester, PA, publishes the writings of Swedish scientist and philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772). The non-profit organization, founded over 150 years ago, also publishes works that relate to Swedenborg's influence on the arts, religion, theology, psychology, and literature.  Much of his writing relates to a deeper understanding of Christianity, often referred to as the New Church. A number of well-known people have been fascinated and/or influenced by Swedenborg's insights--Helen Keller, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Honore de Balzac, Immanuel Kant, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Carl Jung, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, August Strindberg, DT Suzuki, and Dr. Mehmet Oz.
