Description

This work contains Swedenborgโ€™s solution to the โ€œproblem of evilโ€โ€”that is, to the question of how one is to reconcile the notion of a loving God with the existence of evil, hardship, and suffering. It is also something of a self-help book, showing what the individual needs to do in order to change inwardly. As a part of its general presentation of the action of divine providence, it includes a nuanced discussion of freedom of the will and arguments against two traditional Christian notions: that some people are predestined to hell and that it is possible to be saved instantly.

About the Author

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688โ€“1772) was a Swedish scientist, nobleman, and theologian who spent his life investigating the mysteries of the soul. Born in Stockholm to a staunchly Lutheran family, he graduated from the University of Uppsala and then traveled to England, Holland, France, and Germany to study the leading scientists of the time. He gained favor with Swedenโ€™s King Charles XII, who gave him a position on the board of overseers of the Swedish mining industry. Later, he was granted a seat on the Swedish House of Nobles by Charles XIIโ€™s successor, Queen Ulrika Eleonora. Between 1743 and 1745 he began to have visions of heaven, hell, and Jesus Christ that resulted in a stream of books about the nature of God, the afterlife, and the inner meaning of the Bible. He devoted the last decades of his life to studying Scripture and presenting his own unique theology to the world.

George F. Dole holds a BA from Yale, an MA from Oxford, and a PhD from Harvard. Now professor emeritus, Dr. Dole taught ancient languages, the Bible, and theology at the Swedenborg School of Religion in Newton, Massachusetts. He is also the author of Freedom and Evil, Sorting Things Out, and A Book about Us. He lives in Bath, Maine.

Reviews

“Written at a time of intense philosophical and theological debate on the nature of God’s governance of the world, Swedenborg’s Divine Providenceย is in many ways far more original and thought-provoking than anything produced by his contemporaries.”

โ€”Glenn A. Magee, Ph.D., author, Hegel and the Hermetic

Divine Providence is a challenging essay on the nature of human freedom, a forceful attempt to justify God’s ways to humankind. . . . Dole’s eloquent new translation . . . brings an important and much-needed eighteenth-century treasure to a twenty-first-century world.”

โ€”Gary Lachman, author, A Secret History of Consciousness
